NOTE:
the below information has been collated by phone to the various clinics
and/or is derived from pamphlets available from clinics; we have concentrated
on providing a wide range of information which we know, from our experience
when counselling women and when dealing with their questions, is important
to them. Due to the xmas-new year closure of our service, we have not
been able to canvass all issues with all clinics (e.g. access to multi-lingual
printed information and access to counselling via the Telephone Interpreting
Service) we will update this list when we return at the end of
January 2004 with much more detail.
We
make no recommendation to any particular clinic. Rather we
concentrate on providing comprehensive information about the services
available at clinics so that women can work out which clinic will best
meet their particular needs. In terms of deciding which clinic will
best meet your needs we suggest the following thoughts:
- remember
you are having surgery performed on your body, therefore, you need
to feel confident about whatever clinic you are attending; you also
need to feel confident that your needs are being met and that you
are being treated with respect thus, we suggest you ring
at least three (3) clinics to get a feel for their attitude
and as to how you may be treated;
- recheck
the information we have provided in this list when you ring a clinic,
particularly if there is an issue which is really, really important
for you, e.g. your partner being in surgery at the beginning of the
procedure you need to raise this type of request at the appointment
making time so that your request can be accommodated;
- dont
assume that the nearest clinic is the best one to go to if
your decision to have a termination has been a hard one and you dont
have a lot of support from family and friends, choose a clinic that
provides counselling which is provided by a trained counsellor;
- dont
assume that the cheapest is the best either whilst we acknowledge
that women receive less wages than men and have carer or parenting
responsibilities which mean that there is not a lot of money available,
considering your own needs and ensuring that you have those needs
met is important when having this operation;
- if money
is difficult for you, do raise this with a clinic and ask whether
you can pay the fee off by instalment; if you make this request be
prepared prior to the call and have your instalment plan worked out
so to put it to the clinic; there is no guarantee that a clinic will
say yes to such a request but most clinics are willing
to discuss arrangements; if money is an issue for you look for the
clinics which provide a reduced fee for Health Care Card holders and
students;
- check
that the clinic has an after hours number and ensure that you keep
any pamphlets which have that number when you leave the clinic so
that you can phone their after hours number if you are concerned about
anything post-operatively;
- remember
to keep with you after you leave a clinic the pamphlets which describe
the risks and complications of the operation and the aftercare
instructions it is important that you follow the aftercare
instructions as they are usually commonsense suggestions designed
to reduce any risk of infection (e.g. nothing in the vagina for two
weeks after the operation) and/or to identify early any symptoms which
may indicate the development of a post-operative complication;
- make
up for yourself, the day prior to going to the clinic and for your
return home from the clinic, what we call a post-abortion comfort
pack - that is a hot water bottle (a hot water bottle on the lower
abdomen can relieve post-operative cramping); some Panadol or other
pain-relievers for possible pain post-operatively take only
as directed on the packet though; Rescue Remedy if available; some
lavender oil for the temples; and a thermometer it is advisable
to take your temperature morning and night for the first week after
the operation if your temperature is over 37.5 degrees go to
your GP for a check-up as having a temperature over 37.5 degrees and
a general feeling of being unwell may be the sign of a low-grade infection
and you may need a stronger course of antibiotics.
We welcome
womens feedback on the usefulness of this list and its contents.

We are
aware that there may be other doctors around the state of NSW occasionally
performing abortions. We believe that it is important that abortion
providing doctors see themselves as part of a fraternity of doctors
who are providing an important service to women. Providing abortions
in a safe and affordable setting is an honourable profession.
The Bessie Smyth Foundation believes that to ensure standards are maintained
within abortion clinics in relation to medical services, counselling
services, infection control and other services, it is desirable for
an abortion providing doctor to be either a member of the Abortion Providers
Federation of Australasia or to at least attend and participate in their
bi-annual conferences.
Involvement in the Abortion Providers Federation of Australasia exposes
an abortion providing doctor to debate and discussion about new methodology;
to update workshops about new methods of contraception, anaesthesia
and abortion methodology and other information. We also believe that
it is important that an abortion providing service maintains membership
of accrediting bodies such as the National Association of Testing Authorities,
the Infection Control Association, the AMA Council for Infection Control
and other standards organizations. We will obtain this information from
providers as we update this information in February 2004.
Compiled by Margaret Kirkby, Coordinator, The Bessie Smyth Foundation,
in December 2003.
